Mental health issues are some of the leading causes of disability in the workplace. Employee assistance programs, or EAPs, are supposed to help business owners control the cost of mental health by supporting employees through personal crises that affect their work performance.

But do they really work? For advisors dealing with cash-strapped owners, answering that question has been difficult because of a lack of Canadian-specific data on the effectiveness of EAPs.
